Isle Royale National Park is slowly increasing recreational access to the park, with nearly all campgrounds, docks and hiking trails now open.
Gasoline and diesel fuel for boaters is now available at Rock Harbor and Windigo. The Rock Harbor Dockside Store will open with a very limited selection of camping food and supplies.
The park’s mainland headquarters in Houghton, Mich., has reopened, as have visitor centers at Rock Harbor and Windigo on the island, albeit with reduced hours.
The private company Isle Royale Seaplanes has resumed operations and provides visitor transportation to the park from Grand Marais and Hancock, Michigan, but passenger boat ferry service to the island remains suspended for the entire year.
Rock Harbor Lodge, Lakeside Lodge, housekeeping cabins, the gift shop, Lighthouse Restaurant, Greenstone Grill, the marina (with the exception of fuel sales), fishing charters, sightseeing tours and water taxi service from Minnesota and Michigan all remain closed.
The Windigo Store, marina and camper cabins, as well as the North Desor campground and Minong Trail from Hatchet Lake junction to East Huginnin Trail junction are also closed.
Visitors should pay entrance fees in advance at pay.gov. Boater overnight permits will be issued by phone and email from the Houghton visitor center. Backcountry camping permits for seaplane passengers will be issued on the island upon arrival. Call 906-482-0984 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
