It only takes a second for things to go your way. It can be hunting, fishing or related to pretty much anything.
On this occasion it was turkey hunting. My wife decided that she would like to try it this year and with the first season of over-the-counter licenses available, timing was perfect. The night before we were going out, I checked a few spots where I had gotten or at least spotted a few birds. After a little scouting we had a couple spots but nothing that was great.
We started out early the first morning and heard a few birds in the distance. After the sun came up and a couple of hours without a peep, we spotted a lone bird cross the field 100 yards away. Things were not starting off the way I planned. The next morning, in a new spot, was pretty much a repeat, except we saw two birds. Nothing in range.
We followed up that morning by checking some new areas and a few phone calls to fellow hunters for some advice. You see I really, really wanted her to get a bird, then I knew she would be hooked. After taking a day off, we had only one day left of her season. We went out in the afternoon and would have a four-hour sit. We called and looked for 3 hours and 50 minutes. And when we were already making plans to hunt the last season, Tammy whispered the magic words, “Turkeys right there.”
On our right the birds appeared about 10 yards away, they went right for the decoy. The only problem is, they were right in the sunset and she couldn’t see to shoot. They would walk and I would call and stop them, still no shot. This happened a few times and finally she had a shot at a legal bird at 47 yards. And then it happened, that moment when a long hunt changed into celebration in a split second. With one shot she filled her tag with only 10 minutes left of the season.
Next time you are starting to wonder if your luck will change, it just might in a second.
